Packing for a Short Term Abroad

When beginning my preparations, I referred a lot to my notes that I took during the study abroad orientation. Pack smart, light, and effectively. But, also prepare for anything. For me, I was only going to be gone for 16 days, and I was supposed to have washing once, so it was like packing for a one-week vacation. I researched the weather of Valencia in the season I went, and checked it the days beforehand to make sure I am prepared. It was cool weather, so I had two jackets, a rain jacket, three sweatpants, jeans and khakis, and then a few pairs of shorts for the sunny days! This was all great except for when I changed my housing situation, my washing machine broke, and I immediately had to plan out how to wear what I had and make it last without washing. Of course, there were lavanderias (laundromats), but I had enough after planning to make it last. Least to say, check the weather, and wear simple clothing. Also, pack enough for emergencies, but be light in the process. You may need extra room in your suitcase for a souvenir. No need to stand out, but rather try to fit in with the culture. Don’t be flashy! The one time I stood out was when I wore my Tech shirt because everyone was intrigued about the American College System. I thought this was simple, but maybe next time I will just stick to plain clothing.
